Artist's Comments

... or the alternative title, according to is 'Seven Brides for Seven Beasties'

I've produced this for the latest contest for I wasn't sure I'd captured the mythological aspect enough and so I created a prison cell and threw some orcs, trolls, a cyclops and Hercules into the prison. OK, I was being silly when I added Hercules.

It was a struggle to get this finished. I've been finding it really hard to get back into my art after recent events. In light of how I'm feeling right now, please don't be too brutal with your criticism; I'm sure there are a lot of things I could have done better. This was a bit of a mega undertaking and I've been a total disaster tonight - I even managed to rip it twice as I removed it from my drawing board. It's all done in pencil and measures approx 15 1/2 x 22inches ... it was bigger, but a bit of detail was sacrificed when I trimmed it. I had to scan it in eight sections and piece it pack together in photoshop.

Here are the credits for the reference materials used. I need to add fuller details for the wolf and bear and hope I can do this soon. A lot of this drawing is also from my imagination btw :-
The two tigers were drawn using reference photos supplied by Links to each photo below

The credit for the wolf ref photo will be given later. I used a pic supplied by a friend for another work which I'll be doing in collaboration with her; but I don't have details of the stock supplier just yet.
The bear ref pic came from an Observer newspaper - I will give full details in due course. It was a head and shoulders shot and I've reversed the image and invented the rest of the body.
The bird, the snake and the lemur are all invented, as are the prisoners in the cell - no ref pics used there.
And now for the warrior maidens :-
L-R
This first maiden doesn't look much like the stock reference supplied by I've retained the pose, but made a few changes. [link]
The maiden with a snake is based on a stock photo supplied by I've made changes here too including different clothing, plus the invented arm holding the snake and the boot drawn from imagination.

I used a stock photo by as reference for this image [link]
The kneeling warrior maiden is based on a stock photo by I've made a few minor changes in my interpretation.
[link]
The warrior maiden seated on a throne is based on a stock photo which I'm very much indebted to as it also provide me with the inspiration for the background and it dictated the perspective of the rest of the drawing. The image was supplied by [link]
The next warrior maiden is based upon another image supplied by
[link]
The final warrior maiden is based on an image by I've added a hand and her skirt. I also reversed the image.

I hope that's everything :D

Warriors by *fagashlil has, quite frankly, had far too much work put into it to not receive a DD. Beautiful tones, great composition and hours upon hours of work have definately paid off! (Suggested by `Doubtful-Della and Featured by `De-Profundis)

I absolutely adore it. The way that each warrior has her own style is very important, and I love how they all stand before a prison filled with men.

Oh wow. My breath is taken away from me. Art like this is what keeps me going as a stock artists. It's not your normal cut and paste photomanipulation that gets boring and the same. This is something that a true artist took time and sweat to create, and used their imagination!

I am so honored to be among so many great stock artists! The tiger on the right is spot on! I am so glad that they came in handy! Great work!

OK, I can comment now...
As I said, this is stunning. The tiger(s!) alone would have been an accomplishment for me, much less this many gorgeous, detailed warrior women. You've done a great job keeping them distinguished, individual, detailed, and yet uniform, and the animals are all top notch. You did a good job of depth as well, though I think that perhaps a tad more contrast might be warranted here and there to really make the foreground jump. Still, this is minor, as the whole thing is fantastic and an amazing feat on any day (month, really), so major kudos.
And strangely enough, I recognized Sorbo right out of the box... ;)

Beautiful. :+fav:

I dont think the picture is a total disaster, on the contrary its really great :wow:

There are so much detail in every woman you can just spend hours watching every character and admire their clothing, face and pose.

My favorites are the one with sword in the forground, middle left: she looks like a determined, hard seasoned warrior, which has seen a lot of bad things but didnt lost her confidence but instead keep growing on them. The other one is the girl in the middle throne seat: she looks so sweet, young and innocent, a light view of the world and always out for fun and a good joke, but the wicked dagger suggests a depth of her mind and that you dont want to enrage her.

The only minor flaw are the guys in the background: also some of them looks like monster or bad guys they all seems to be more on the groupie side then well worthy adverseries. But maybe they are just the husbands which has been kept out of this illustrious gathering, now standing like beggars on the doorstep, knowing they will never have the chance to rise to such a glory as the women inside ;)

I was looking for the Amazons ar Amazon.com, but they were here all along. Great drawing. Women and carnivores, my favorite theme.
